By Deputy Chief Chris Rimm
March 15, 2012

On Thursday night at around 9:50PM the Continental Village Fire Department was dispatched to a chimney fire on Wharton Drive in the Town Of Cortlandt. Upon arrival units found heavy smoke coming from the chimney and a smoke condition inside the residence with a strong smell of oil. When firefighters made their way to the basement they found smoke coming from the boiler and oil leaking onto the basement floor. Upon further investigation firefighters discovered that the inside of the boiler was on fire and the flu pipe was clogged solid with soot. Firefighters used a dry Chem. extinguisher to put out the fire in the boiler and dismantled the flu pipe to look for extension. Firefighters then used fans to ventilate the CO from the house. Peekskill Ambulance was called to the scene to evaluate the homeowner and The Town of Cortlandt Code enforcement was called to the scene to evaluate the condition of the house. Firefighters cleared the scene around 11PM.
